2. Prepare and Apply

Once you have decided on a program, it is time to gather your documents and submit your application. There is a $30 USD application fee, which can be paid via credit card at the time of application. We have provided further information on the application processes below:

Application Process:

3. Submit Visa Documents

If you are not on a valid visa for study in the U.S., you will need an initial I-20. You are not eligible to study on a B1/B2 visa. If you hold another visa type, please contact hospitality@fiu.edu for more information.

FIU creates the I-20 document you will need to take to the U.S. Embassy/Consulate in your home country. FIU is required by the Department of Homeland Security/US Citizenship and Immigration Services to carefully review the financial ability of each student prior to issuing this document. Therefore, it is important that you are aware of the cost of attending FIU and that you have sufficient funds to support yourself.

You can find detailed information on the supporting documents on our admissions website. It is recommended that you do not submit the financial documents untilafter your file has been forwarded to the admission committee.

Your I-20 will be sent via email only. If you have not received this within three weeks of submitting all financial documents, please follow up with hospitality@fiu.edu or your assigned Recruitment Team Member.

Once you have received your I-20, you will need to schedule a visa appointment and pay the necessary SEVIS fees. Do not enter the United States for your program unless you have secured an F-1 visa.

Please refer to this document for information on the amount to be shown on Declaration of Finance & Bank letters.

 4. Confirm Your Admission

Once you have been admitted, you will need to confirm your intention to enroll. You will receive an email from your program with next steps in the enrollment process. Undergraduate students will be required to submit an admission deposit.  (Note that your deposit holds your seat in the program and space fills up quickly.). Please visit the FIU admissions site to find detailed next step information.

Please connect with your assigned academic advisor at the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management to discuss enrollment. To pay your tuition, you will log into your myFIU account and pay via check, wire transfer, or credit card. You can also pay in person on campus.

5. Plan Your Arrival

Once you have secured your F-1 visa and confirmed your admission, you should begin planning your travel and housing arrangements.

As an international student, you can arrive in the US no more than 30 days before the first day of classes. It is recommended that you arrive at least one week before your first day of classes to account for any flight delays, orientation, and adjusting to the time difference. Please refer to your FIU email for further information on orientations that may be held before the first day of classes and ensure your travel is planned accordingly.

Students are recommended to attend pre-arrival orientation held by the Office of International Student and Scholars Services (ISSS). Upon arrival, it is imperative that you complete the ISSS arrival check in within 10 days of your arrival in Miami.

You can find more information on planning your arrival on our Office of International Student & Scholar Services website.

6. Take Care of Medical Requirements (Immunizations & Insurance)

  1. You will not be able to register for classes without submitting this information to Student Health Services (SHS). You are required to have approved medical insurance. There are no exceptions to this policy.
  2. Refer to the Immunization Requirements on the SHS website.
  3. Refer to the Medical Insurance Requirements on the SHS website.
